Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station Formerly Dedicated January 12, 2008
The replacement Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station was formally dedicated on January 12, 2008, a culmination of seven years of design and eight years of construction. Representing Ferraro Choi was Joe Ferraro, along with National Science Foundation Construction Manager Jerry Marty, retired chairman and CEO of Lockheed Martin Corp. Norman R. Augustine, Director of the National Science Foundation Dr. Arden Bement, Under Secretary, Democracy and Global Affairs Paula Dobriansky, and New Jersey Congressman Rodney Frelinghuysen.
The $153 million Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station is a one-of-a-kind research station that is the most technological and sophisticated structure ever built at the South Pole. The new station replaces the 1975 geodesic dome facility and provides a much more hospitable working environment for scientists performing an ever increasing range of scientific research within the extreme conditions of the polar plateau. The dedication of this landmark facility marks the 50th anniversary of the International Geophysical Year (IGY), when the first scientists took residence at the very first South Pole station, and the beginning of International Polar Year 2007-2008, a large scientific program focused on the Arctic and the Antarctic from March 2007 to March 2009.
