SHRINERS HOSPITAL FOR CHILDREN
Honolulu, Hawaii

Project Scope and History:
Shriners Hospitals for Children is a network of 22 pediatric hospitals in the U.S., Canada and Mexico providing specialized care for orthopedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries and cleft lip and palate. Established in 1923, the Honolulu Hospital is the second oldest and has provided orthopedic health care to over 23,000 children from Hawaii and seventeen other countries in the Pacific Basin.

Ferraro Choi teamed with the prime architectural firm of SRG Partnership Inc. to design the replacement hospital for Shriners Hospital for Children in Honolulu, Hawaii. The project is a phased replacement of the present buildings originally constructed in the 1960’s. The design of the new 6.58 acre campus will expand and modernize the facilities from its present 86,000 square feet to approximately 150,000 square feet. The new 40-bed hospital will allow Shriners Hospital for Children to fulfill their mission and meet the future needs of their patients as the premier Pediatric Orthopedic Hospital in the State of Hawaii.

Program Requirements:
Program requirements for the replacement hospital included the following:

  • Acute Care Nursing

The phased construction is anticipated to start in 2007 with completion in 2011.
