Green Design Lahainaluna High School Cafeteria Under Construction Construction is under way for the new sustainably-designed Lahainaluna High School Cafeteria. Scheduled for a November 2011 completion, the $8 million project will provide much needed dining seating for 650 students inclusive of indoor and lanai dining. Indoor assembly seating capacity will be for approximately 1,000 students. Founded in 1831, Lahainaluna High School (LHS) is the oldest school in Hawaii with student enrollment currently at 1,080. Located on the foothills of the West Maui Mountains overlooking Lahaina, the approximate 1.0 acre project site is previously-developed land with significant grade changes and slopes near the upper western border of the existing high school campus adjacent to the existing cafeteria. The site, characterized by moderate to steep slopes, provides challenges for new construction and accessibility. Water and power are readily available. The design concept for the new cafeteria is based upon cross and stack ventilation, daylighting, shading, and views to the west. Although the Department of Education will not seek LEED certification at this time, the new Cafeteria will incorporate and integrate sustainable design strategies and features that will be comparable to those required to achieve LEED Silver certification in accordance with LEED for New Construction (NC) guidelines. Emphasis will be placed upon energy efficiency, daylighting, shading, superior ventilation, measurement and verification system, and renewable energy system(s).
