Ferraro Choi's CANSTRUCTION® "Da Pineapple"
Wins "Best Use of Labels" and the "People's Choice" Awards
A team from Ferraro Choi participated in the first-ever Canstruction® Honolulu at Pearlridge Shopping Center and won “Best Use of Labels” and the “Peoples’ Choice Award” for its submission of “Da Pineapple,” a 6-foot+ sculpture of a Hawaiian pineapple complete with a crown of curved leaves that in itself weighed over 100 pounds. The team used approximately 6,200 cans of tuna to create the Hawaiian icon. Because the People’s Choice Award was decided by public vote with one canned good equalling one vote, Ferraro Choi’s entry accumulated an additional 3,100 additional cans of food for the cause.
Only 5 members were allowed to work on the sculpture during the 6-hour event, which included: Andrew Tang (Team Captain), David Akinaka, Kim Farrant, Ella Dedicatoria, and Gloria Chong (HCDA). Joe Ferraro and Troy Miyasato were unofficial Canstruction® members at the event (we all need cheerleaders…), and Ira Freeman and Bryan Miyasaki were a part of the Canstruction® design team.
Trademarked by the Society for Design Administration and working in tandem with the American Institute of Architects, Canstruction® is an international community service project to fight hunger. Led by architects and engineers, competing teams design and build giant sculptures made entirely of canned goods. The only other materials allowed are quarter-inch leveling, cardboard, tape, rubber bands and wire. At the end of the competition and exhibition, all of the canned food is donated to local food banks. Participating teams not only design and construct their sculptures but are also responsible for obtaining their own supply of canned goods.
Local event sponsors included Pearlridge Center, Foodland, Meadow Gold, Oceanic Time Warner Cable Media Sales, Cox Radio Hawaii, HonBlue, and benefit sponsor, The Hawaii Foodbank,
It was a fun event that was a win-win situation for all!
