HAWAII EXPLORATIONS ACADEMY
Kailua-Kona, Hawaii
West Hawaii Explorations Academy is a small project-based charter
high school located on a 1.5 acre parcel in the Hawaii Ocean Science
and Technology (HOST) Park at Keahole Point in Kona. The school
retained Ferraro Choi And Associates Ltd to produce a sustainable
master plan for a 4.8 acre parcel also in the HOST park, adjacent
to the NELHA Hawaii Gateway Energy Center.
The planning of the 30,000 square foot facility considered the
addition of a middle school and provisions for guided tours. Sustainable
design strategies include proper building orientation for shading,
day lighting, natural ventilation, a balanced cut-and-fill approach
to grading, native planting, renewable energy sources, and use of
cold Deep Seawater for selected space and process cooling.
