Project Scope and History: Ferraro Choi teamed with the prime architectural firm of SRG Partnership Inc. to design the replacement hospital for Shriners Hospital for Children in Honolulu, Hawaii. The project was a phased replacement of buildings originally constructed in the 1960’s. The design of the new 6.58 acre campus expanded and modernized the facilities from its previous 86,000 square feet to approximately 150,000 square feet. The new 40-bed hospital allows Shriners Hospital for Children to fulfill their mission and meet the future needs of their patients as the premier Pediatric Orthopedic Hospital in the State of Hawaii. Program Requirements:
The design is sensitive to its unique Pacific island location and neighboring communities, reflecting Hawaii’s historic Territorial Architecture of the 1920’s to 1940’s. The project commenced in 2004 with assessment of the site and existing facilities, followed by detailed programming, planning and design. Phased construction started in 2007 with completion in 2011.
