KAMEHAMEHA
SCHOOLS/BERNICE PAUAHI BISHOP ESTATE
Honolulu, Hawaii
2002 Honolulu
AIA Award
The foundation of the design concept is based on the values, spirit,
and legacy of Bernice Pauahi Bishop. Consequently, choices of forms,
material treatments, and character of space relate to past and present
Hawaiian values and the KS/BE Mission Statement, while still providing
functional, contemporary, and progressive offices by today's standards.
The extensive KS/BE art collection emphasizing historical and depictive
images of the Aina, flora and fauna, was used throughout. In addition,
local craftsmen and women were commissioned to provide a few select
koa wood furniture pieces and Kapa print art. The students of Kamehameha
Schools also provided a multitude of original carvings, sculptures,
photographs, paintings, and prints.
Delicate integration of cultural imagery that bespeaks the legacy
of Bernice Pauahi Bishop intertwined with contemporary functionalism
work to give this environment and its workers a sense of place.
