Ferraro Choi's "Melting" Wins CANSTRUCTION® Hawaii 2008 People's Choice Award

Ferraro Choi participated in the 2008 Third Annual Canstruction® Competition at Pearlridge Shopping Center and received Honorable Mention and the People's Choice Award for its submission of “Melting,” an 8-foot+ sculpture of a penguin amidst a melting iceberg. People’s Choice Award is given to the structure that receives the most votes (one can of food equaling one vote) from members of the public during the two-week exhibition.

BREAKING RECORDS FOR A GOOD CAUSE
Overall, Ferraro Choi was able to collect 4,993 pounds (almost 2.5 tons!) of canned goods, which exceeded its previous record of 4,069 pounds of canned goods collected for its 2007 Canstruction® entry. At the end of the exhibition, all canned goods are donated to the Hawaii Foodbank, a non-profit organization in the state of Hawaii that collects, warehouses and distributes mass quantities of both perishable and non-perishable food to 250 member agencies and food banks on the Big Island of Hawaii, Maui and Kauai.

TEAM EFFORT
Team participants from Ferraro Choi included Team Captain Andrew Tang, Christen and Kenny Kirkwood, Brandon Dengler, Sam DeGracia, Gerald Choi, Troy Miyasato, Bill Brooks, Sally Maddock, Kim Farrant, Kurt Katada, Shawn Moynahan, Ky Mikagi, and Julie Pfeifer.

WHAT IS CANSTRUCTION®?
Trademarked by the Society for Design Administration and working in tandem with the American Institute of Architects, Canstruction® is an international community service project to fight hunger. Led by architects and engineers, competing teams design and build giant sculptures made entirely of canned goods, which are limited to a footprint of eight feet by eight feet and a height limitation of eight feet. The only other materials allowed besides canned goods are quarter-inch leveling, cardboard, tape, rubber bands and wire. At the end of the competition and exhibition, all of the canned food are donated to local food banks. Participating teams not only design and construct their sculptures but are also responsible for obtaining their own supply of canned goods.

Local Hawaii Canstruction® event sponsors included Pearlridge Center, Foodland, AIA Honolulu, C&S Wholesale Grocers, HonBlue, and benefit sponsor, The Hawaii Foodbank,

Ferraro Choi is proud to have been a part of a fun community event that helps serve those less fortunate.
